Art Exhibit—Textures of MemoryHundreds of visitors attended the first art exhibit in Hope Abbey. In addition to enjoying the displayed artwork, all were impressed with the beautiful restoration of the mausoleum. Most had never before seen the interior, and people often spent upwards of an hour in the cool and uplifting space. Artist Michael Kroetch (at left) observed:"…time was spent often in silence: sitting, standing, and contemplating the inscribed names and dates, the building, the quality of light and possibly even the effervescence of mortality itself. " Judy Alison's vision of an interactive sacred space brought life into the mausoleum. Visitors added their own creations to the cairn of handmade ceramic stones in the entry hall, shown at left. On closing day, Judy led a ceremonial burning of collected slips of paper inscribed with prayers, names, and blessings. Marilyn Robert's hand-woven banners still grace the interior, but all that remains of the art exhibit are the memories. Improvements at Hope Abbey will ensure that events like these may continue to delight the public. |
