Full of LifeThis community treasure is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Remarkably, it is also an active, operating cemetery. Established in 1859, Eugene’s first cemetery includes pioneers, such as city founder Eugene Skinner, and modern notables like blues disc jockey “Rooster” Gavin Fox. The cemetery retains “Masonic” in its name, as an important historic reference, but is no longer officially affiliated. The historical importance and natural beauty of this woodland setting are being rediscovered and protected. EMC is managed by a vigorous nonprofit organization and small, dedicated staff. The beautifully restored Hope Abbey Mausoleum is open to the public from 1 pm to 4 pm on the last Sunday of each month, except December. Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend, there is an open house at Hope Abbey from 10 am to 4 pm, and taps are played at noon. A work party 10 am to 1 pm the preceding Saturday is open to volunteers. Our generous donors and enthusiastic volunteers are very much appreciated! |
